An entry of well over 300 boats from all over the UK and around the world competed in this year’s Jubilee Race, the 21-mile Thames marathon to find the UK Traditional Boat Champions. They were propelled by more than 2,400 enthusiastic out-and-out regular racers and leisure rowers, ranging from Scouts to dragon boat champions.

Entries were from such diverse organisations as rowing clubs, councils, schools, corporations, livery companies, pubs, youth organisations, police, fire brigades, the armed services, boating and other societies and groups just out to take part and beat the course.

Most were raising money for charity and a high proportion added to the spectacle by competing in fancy dress. The annual race is run on a ‘slowest away first, fastest last’ pursuit handicap basis, meaning the last boat away will have to make up over an hour to win.
