Gloriana is to get a permanent home at Kingston.

Although details are still being worked on by Kingston Borough Council, it will be housed on the river as part of the North Kingston Development.

The move follows a controversial plan to house the Queen's Row Barge at Orleans Park at Twickenham. That plan, drawn up by Richmond-upon-Thames Council, met fierce opposition and was eventually dropped.

As a result neighbouring Kingston stepped forward with an offer of a more permanent base for the vessel which has now been laid up for the winter in Gravesend.

A statement from Kingston Council said: "Gloriana is to be located at Kingston Riverside, adjacent to the proposed North Kingston Development.

"We are appointing consultants to produce a Riverside Supplementary Planning Document, which looks at this area in greater detail, in the coming months."

The council currently has an application to Transport for London for help with the funding of the project which incorporates the town's railway station under a so-called Local Major Schemes budget which provides financial support to boroughs for schemes to improve their transport networks.

Councillor David Cunningham, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Regeneration at Kingston Council, said:"The Gloriana is one element of the regeneration programme incorporating the Town Centre, the riverside, North Kingston and potential redevelopment around Kingston Railway Station.

"If our application to TfL is unsuccessful, these works could be incorporated at a later date through other schemes and with other partner funding.

"Whenever completed, these works bring an added value to and will enhance the regeneration of Kingston. This is not a scheme which will be funded by Royal Borough of Kingston council tax payers."
