The first visible signs of Thames Tideway Tunnel construction work along the river came with the arrival of floating equipment at Blackfriars.

The construction rig was towed upstream ready to be installed on the giant retractable legs to allow work to start on moving Blackfriars Pier. The current pier is the location of one of the tunnel's construction sites.

The Tideway Tunnel will run for 16 miles from West London to Abbey Mills in East London, mostly under the river. It will eventually provide storage and disposal of raw sewage and rainwater discharges that currently overflow into the river.

The £4.2 billion tunnel will be constructed at a depth of between 100 ft and 250 ft below the capital and will open in 2023.
