Cutty Sark is to be transformed into an opera venue for a production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.

The Olivier Award winning company, OperaUpClose, will stage the opera under the spectacular copper hull on November 21st.

Performed by seven singers and accompanied by viola, clarinet and piano, one of the world’s best-loved operas is a new English version by OperaUpClose artistic director, Robin Norton-Hale.

Cutty Sark was reopened after a £50 million renovation following a devastating fire three years ago and now has over 260,000 visitors a year. Besides the space below the hull part of hold is also is used as a small theatre. Recent productions have included a pre-Edinburgh comedy festival. The ship is also hired as a private venue and has recently been licensed for weddings.

The ship was built in 1869, was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest.
