First confirmed details have been announced of the Environment Agency’s £2.75 million programme of works on the River Thames over the next few months.

They include the temporary closure of 12  locks for varying periods during the winter. Most closures start in November or January although Teddington barge lock is in September.

The EA’s Harbourmaster Matt Carter said: “[The work]  is needed to keep the locks in good condition for boaters to enjoy, and maintain river levels for other river users and wildlife.”

Iffley Lock 1 November 2012 to 22 February 2013
Replacing the lock gates
Abingdon Lock 1 November 2012 to 8 March 2013
Refurbishing the lock chamber
Whitchurch Lock 1 November 2012 to 15 December 2012
Repairs to lock gates and lock chamber cills
Marlow Lock 5 November 2012 to 15 December 2012

Repairs to lock gate anchor plates.  Sunbury Old Lock will remain open during the closure of the new lock. Passage will be limited to published lock keeper hours of duty.
