Firefighters from across Berkshire took part in a major exercise on the Thames in Reading.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service marked the beginning of the first national Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Week (13-19 April) by staging a dramatic live exercise by Reading Bridge.

Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Week is an initiative led by the Chief Fire Officers Association which aims to raise awareness and reduce deaths

In the exercise a group of demonstrators, intending to hold a protest by suspending themselves from the bridge, got into difficulty: their boat has lost power, leaving one ‘protestor’ suspended precariously under the bridge.(above)

The protestors’ support boat was also caught up above a weir (below right), with one person still on board, three people were in the water (bottom) and a further unconfirmed number of missing people in the vicinity.
