BRIDGE POSTBOX MYSTERY DEEPENS

The mystery of the postbox that appeared on a bridge in the middle of the River Thames has deepened.

The box appeared overnight on a support of Sonning Bridge much to the surprise of boaters and villagers.

Then it was reported that the stunt was to publicise the play Don't Shoot the Messenger, a history of the Royal Mail, by Mikron Theatre Company. The production was staged in the village during the summer.

But this week the company said: "It wasn't us".

Mikron's Rachel Root said: "Unfortunately we can’t lay claim to this! We did notice it during our tour by narrowboat with our show about the postal service.

"Others have suggested that it was a publicity stunt – we wish we’d thought of it!"

Because the bridge is a listed structure the box is to be removed.
