DESTROYER TO SAIL LENGTH OF THAMES

A type-45 destroyer is to sail the length of the Thames - but things are not quite as they seem.

The boat is 16 feet long and is being 'sailed' by model enthusiasts for 250 miles as a charity event.

The Big Thames Cruise will start from Beale Park Model Boat Show May 6th. The boat will head up to Lechlade then downstream along the whole non-tidal river to Teddington before returning to Beale Park for May 17th.

The 1.32 scale model will be controlled from an accompanying cabin cruiser.

The ship is the largest working model of the HMS Daring type-45 destroyer and was created by members of the A Team Boatyard, a group of model makers and exhibitors throughout yhe country.

A team of 12 started building the boat in December 2010 and launched it six months.

Model maker Alan Noble said: "We are all looking forward immensely to the challenge of over 250 miles of travelling on the River Thames and the pleasure it will give people. With an average of 20 miles a day there should be plenty of opportunities for people en route to see her."
