MILLION POUND LOTTERY GRANT FOR FIRE-HIT CLUB

A £1 million lottery grant has been awarded to help rebuild Marlow Rowing Club, virtually destroyed by a major fire two years ago.

The club, on the Thames alongside Marlow Bridge, is where five-times Olympic champion Sir Steve Redgrave started his career.

The club has been fundraising for a £2.5m boathouse since the fire which broke out in the early hours in August 2011 . The new grant is released from from Sport England's Iconic Facilities legacy fund.

A club spokesman said the money would allow the club to rebuild the clubhouse and extend the facilities. It is hoped the new centre will open next year.

The new facilities could also be used by other water sports clubs, including Marlow Canoe Club, Henley Open Water Swimming Club, High Wycombe Triathlon Club and Longridge Canoe Club.
