Housing development is under way on the site of historic boathouses at Eton.

The Rafts on the banks of the River Thames, used by Eton College rowers since 1899, have been partly demolished to make way for 13 homes.

Bewley Homes bought the site from the public school and its initial plans three years ago were strongly opposed by local residents but these were later amended.

The adjoining nineteenth-century River House is being retained. Building work was delayed until after the Olympics.

As part of the development £67,000 was given towards improving a nearby car park and improved public access to the river is promised.
