Visitors get a chance to see behind the scenes at Tower Bridge in the New Year.

The popular annual engineering tours will take place every weekend during January and March 2013 and will include access to areas that are normally out-of-bounds to the public.

First part of the tour is led by an experienced tour guide and includes an audio-visual exploration of bridge Exhibition, which explains its history construction. It also includes the walkways suspended 42 metres above the river and the Victorian Engine Rooms which house the restored steam pumping engines.

The second part will be conducted by a senior technical officer, who will take guests to those areas that are normally off-limits to the public, including the bridge control room, the  bascule chambers below the level of the river bed and the machinery room that houses the hydraulics that power the lifting of the Bridge.

Since Tower Bridge opened in 1894 and was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever built.  Tickets are priced at £30 and each tour is limited to 12 places.
