Two new high-speed E class lifeboats have been officially named at ceremonies at the RNLI's station at Chiswick. They are the Dougie & Donna B, and the Brawn Challenge.

Olympic rower Greg Searle officially named the Dougie and Donna B, and paid tribute to the volunteer crews who risk their own safety to save others.

The funding for the lifeboat came from south east London couple Douglas and Rosemary 'Donna' Battams, who left the RNLI a sum in their will. The couple, who never had children, chose to support the RNLI in their will because of Dougie’s association with the sea - in the Merchant Navy for many years and then working on the Thames with the Port of London Authority.

After the ceremony the rower met friends and relatives of the couple who helped fund the £365,000 cost in their wills.

Earlier Formula One racing boss, Ross Brawn, visited the Chiswick RNLI Lifeboat Station to name another E class lifeboat, this one named the Brawn Challenge in his honour

In 2010, Ross agreed to become the figurehead for an innovative RNLI fundraising drive entitled ‘The Brawn Lifeboat Challenge’. It involved 10 teams from some of the UK’s leading businesses competing in an eight-month fundraising battle to raise the £350,000 cost of the boat.

The individual teams pitched their fundraising strategies to Ross, who offered advice and motivation to ensure that collectively they smashed the fundraising target – raising a total of £360,000.

Representatives from the teams watched the naming ceremony and saw the lifeboat demonstrate its capabilities. The boats are two of three new E-class lifeboats which the lifeboats charity will operate on the River Thames. .
